The regulations currently prohibit the import or manufacture of certain products containing mercury and restrict the mercury content of lamps. The changes proposed follow Canada’s ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury to phase out certain products and align Canadian legislation with the Convention as well as other industry standards. The consultation closes on April 2, 2018.
In addition, ECCC is requesting input from stakeholders on options for improving the recovery and recycling of mercury-containing lamps. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments by March 1, 2018.
