The regulation implements a key initiative of the Circular Economy Action plan to make batteries more sustainable. Requirements include:
increasing portable battery collection targets from 45% today to 70% by 31 December 2030
preparing a carbon footprint report for electric vehicle batteries and industrial rechargeable batteries from 1 July 2024
meeting recycled content criteria for lithium, cobalt, lead and nickel
establishing performance and durability criteria
providing information on batteries to a central electronic exchange system
The proposal will now be reviewed by the European Parliament and the Council.
