Following an application to renew exemption 39, which exempted the use of cadmium in colour converting light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for use in display systems until 1 July 2014, exemption 39a replaces exemption 39 in Annex III as follows:
39a Cadmium selenide in downshifting cadmium-based semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots for use in display lighting applications (< 0,2 μg Cd per mm2 of display screen area)
The exemption expires for all categories on 31 October 2019.
Member States are required to adopt and publish regulations to comply with this Directive by 20 November 2018.
