Defra have produced a guidance document to prepare UK organisations for Extended Producer Responsibility changes which take effect 1 January 2023.
Businesses with an annual turnover over £1m and who are responsible for over 25 tonnes of packaging in a calendar year will be affected, which represents a significant lowering of the obligation threshold.
Existing requirements for packaging data reporting and the purchase of PRNs, either individually or through a compliance scheme will remain. However additional data must be supplied on packaging types and which country in the UK the packaging was supplied to. Companies should prepare for changes by collecting data from their packaging suppliers and modifying IT systems to ensure that nation data can be obtained.
